My work reflects my concerns with contemporary issues in visual art and in the wider social and cultural structures in which we are now living. My materials have evolved into a mix of media, photography, painting, drawing, wall painting and collage. I want to represent the here and now, all too often art is the outsider to everyday life and issues. Community and belonging, notions of place, identity, youth culture and the build environment vs. the natural environment influence my practice. Many of the works document recreation sites used by those with least power the alleyways and parks used by the youth and the homeless, those with nowhere else to go. The most recent pieces are set between the hours of 10pm and 4am, when public places become private spaces for different groups and individuals. As an artist my interest is rooted in the links between the time, the places, the people, and the contrast with mainstream society. The images created depict scenes lit only by the glow of streetlights and passing cars making the works intimate investigations of the location and people who occupy them. What appeals to me are the dual functions of areas from day to night and the different range of activities that occur during that time. Offering a realistic and evocative portal of society influenced by conversations, newspaper cuttings, advertising and the evidence left from the night before, I explore the corners that are normally passed by. |
